The Point of L.I.F.E.

Your professional career started yesterday. As a business student in a top undergraduate program, you should compete for highly ranked internships!

Most summer internships are offered before the start of the spring semester. Securing an internship for the summer is the first step to starting your professional L.I.F.E.

An internship is any career-related experience that builds your skills and abilities and gives you more advancement towards your career goals:

  • You can apply the skills and knowledge you’ve learned in the classroom
  • You can challenge yourself to try new things
  • You can test drive future career options
  • You can prove yourself to a potential future employer

Important L.I.F.E. Steps

Step 1: Research internships and companies you are interested in.

There are internship guides available in the Undergraduate Professional Development Center, McClelland Hall 203, to search top-rated internships.

Many top internship programs will post opportunities on internship search websites (see below).

  • Watch deadlines, as most top internships have deadlines before December 31
  • Use networks — your family, friends and peers are great resources to tap into
  • Go to career fairs — take your business cards, research companies beforehand, and tell recruiters you are specifically looking for an internship

Step 2: Update resume and over letters.

Tailor these documents to match individual company/internship qualifications.

For help with your resume:

Step 3: Apply for internships based on company instructions.

Depending on the web site or resource you are using there are various ways to apply. Please check each individual opportunity for specifications.

Step 4: Follow up.

  • After two weeks, follow up with company if you haven’t heard from it. Make contact to see if your documents were received and if you can schedule an interview. Persistence pays off.
  • Update your career profile on eSMS and let the Professional Development Center team know about your successes!
