2008 Eller Ethics Case Competition

On October 6th teams will receive the ethics case and instructions on how to proceed. Teams will be asked to submit an executive summary and their PowerPoint presentation by no later than October 20th (these materials will be assembled for judges).” Teams are allowed to consult with faculty in developing their materials and presentation prior to the competition, but once the competition begins, faculty are not to consult with their students. Professional dress is required and students will not be permitted to use note cards during their presentation.
- Teams will be divided into four brackets with 5 teams per bracket. Each team will be asked to identify the stakeholders in the case, the financial, legal, and philosophical considerations, and offer recommendations on how to proceed. Teams will be asked to assume a particular identity (e.g., company employees and/or consultants) and will present to a particular audience (e.g., company executives and/or a board of directors). Presentations are not to exceed 20 minutes and will be followed by approximately 5 minutes of questioning from the judges. The top three teams from each bracket (a total of 12 teams) will advance to Round Two.
- Advancing teams will be divided into two super brackets with 6 teams per bracket. Each team will receive new information on the case and be asked to answer detailed and sophisticated questions posed by a panel of judges. The question/answer round will last approximately 15 minutes and will be followed by approximately 5 minutes of feedback from the judges. The top two teams from each super bracket (a total of 4 teams) will advance to the Final Round.
- Following the presentation format from Round One, Finalists will have the opportunity to incorporate feedback from the judges into their final presentation. The order of Finalist presentations will be assigned randomly. Final presentations are not to exceed 10 minutes and will be followed by approximately 5 minutes of questioning from the entire panel of judges. First, Second, Third, and Fourth place will be announced at the Recognition Dinner.
Judges will utilize the following criteria in evaluating teams throughout the competition:
- Delivery
- Depth of analysis
- Persuasiveness
- Recommendations that are both ethical and practical in a business context
- Responses to questions
