Madrid Internship Program

The Madrid Internship Program is a 7-week summer program which
offers direct placement into a particular work environment that
allows for the student to enhance their professional development,
as well as their Spanish language skills. This internship program
combines an unpaid internship with a number of cultural field
trips to historical monuments, museums, cathedrals, and centers
of political power. By participating, students have the opportunity
to learn not just professional skills, but to appreciate and understand
their host country and citizens.
Internship Placement:
Madrid summer internships are non-paid and earn academic credit.
Placements are made with an emphasis on balancing the needs of
the student with those of the organization.
- An important aspect of this program is flexibility.
Madrid, as the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula, offers infinite
possibilities for prospective interns. If you are too narrow in
where you would like to work or what you hope to accomplish, you
will greatly limit your ability to successfully place you in an
internship. Relevant academic studies or work experience in the
field of the internship for which you are applying is required.
- Please be aware that placement managers cannot guarantee
a specific placement, or the exact duties an employer will ask
you to undertake. These will fluctuate from term to term and will
depend on many factors relating to the changing needs of the organization
as well as the abilities of the student-intern.
- Bear in mind that the range of companies or organizations
that will accept you to work with them, and the range of duties
and responsibilities you will undertake, will be largely determined
by your level of spoken Spanish. With a very few exceptions, work
in Spanish offices is conducted entirely in Spanish, and not supervisor
has the time or energy to repeat instructions or requests, or
to translate them to English, until they are understood.
Academic Credit:
Students are considered UA students while abroad and are registered
at UA in 3 units of "GS 001". Upon completion of the
program abroad Departmental Internship credit (minimum 3 units)
will replace the GS 001 on the student’s academic record
as BNAD 393.
Administration and Location:
Sponsored by EUSA, the office is staffed with several coordinators
that:
- Arrange internship
- Assign and maintain housing
- Provide student life services and support student related
activities.
The Center is located in the beautiful and historic center of
Madrid. In addition to the Madrid staff, University of Arizona
personnel is available in Madrid for the first four weeks of the
program to oversee internship placements and ensure the quality
of the student experience.
Student Life in Madrid:
Students are offered the opportunity to live in a home stay with
a family in Madrid or a shared flat.
Home Stays:
These pre-screened families live all around the city and Madrid’s
excellent public transportation system ensures the internship
sites are normally not more than a 30-45 minute commutes from
the home stay. Students are provided with their own key to the
home and come and go as they please, respecting the family’s
schedules. Students are also provided with breakfast and dinner
and are expected to east lunch near the office. The family also
provides laundry service.
Shared Flats:
Flats are located in central Madrid, easily accessible by bus
and/or metro; and all flats are completely furnished with a common
room and a fully equipped kitchen. Many have internet access via
a wireless connection. Housemates are usually students from Europe
or South America in their last years of college or are pursuing
graduate studies. The students are supplied with a weekly food
stipend. Cooking and cleaning are up to the students, but cleaning
of the common areas is included in their stay. Sheets and sometimes
towels are provided. There is usually a deposit ranging between
180 – 400 Euros that the student must give at the start
of his/her stay to cover any possible damages to the property.
This deposit will be returned to the student at the end of the
program provided no harm has been done to the house.

in good academic standing, with a minimum 3.00 GPA at the time
