This course will study prominent, impactful global emerging markets with a combination of on-campus classes and a study tour. The class will be offered in the Spring of each year. The first 2 years the course will cover India and China (one per year). Thereafter the two countries will be rotated unless another major emerging power gains importance in Global Business. The course will focus on India in 2008. India is fast emerging as a major player in the global economy—some forecast that India will surpass Germany as the world’s fourth largest economy by 2020. India presents a landscape of incredible opportunity and abject poverty all at the same time. India has 17 major languages and 844 dialects. It is as varied in the different parts as it is exotic in its ancient culture. The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the business-related cultural aspects of India. The course content and structure have been designed with this goal in mind. Course Structure The class is structured in two main parts, followed by a smaller third part. The first part (“pre-trip sessions”) includes a series of lectures on issues pertaining to India’s social, cultural and economic and business history. This will begin at the beginning of April. The second part (“India trip”) will involve a two and a half week visit to New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai where students will meet and discuss with executives of some high profile Marketing, Finance, IT, and other industries. The students will also visit several places of cultural interest in these cities. The trip will be planned during ‘pre-session’ time: May 17 – June 1, 2008. The third and final part will include a paper that the students will submit two weeks after our return to the US. These three parts are expected to allow the students to: (a) gain a better understanding of the Indian business culture through an appreciation of her political, social and economic history, b) identify possible business opportunities, and c) observe, first-hand, the facilities, expertise, R&D and talent across various industries in India.
